Jim Connors (JC)

Award-Winning Host, Producer, Voice Talent, Strategist, and Educational Media Leader

Learning from the Original JC

Before anyone called him JC, he was simply Jimmy, the kid with a front row seat to one of the sharpest minds in radio. His father, Jim Connors, known throughout the industry as JC, wasn’t just another voice on the dial. He was a respected broadcaster whose sound carried across markets and generations. At home, he never stepped away from the craft. He built a full studio in the basement.

This wasn’t a hobby corner. It was a working broadcast room lined with gold records, tuned microphones, marked tape reels, and the steady rhythm of production. Jimmy didn’t learn broadcasting from manuals. He learned it from tone knobs, cue marks, tape edits, and the way his dad handled silence on the mic.

There were days his father pulled him out of school and brought him to the station. It wasn’t a day off. It was the real classroom. Jimmy watched his dad write copy, take live calls, time out music, and run the full operation from behind the board. By the time most kids were thinking about driver’s ed, he knew how to cut tape, ride levels, read cold copy, and keep a show on time.

What he learned wasn’t a checklist of skills. It was a way of thinking and a respect for the craft. It wasn’t training. It was passing the torch, from the original JC to the next in line.

“My dad was JC. Always. I didn’t get into broadcasting. I was born into it, and I never left. Now that I’m older and he is no longer here, I carry his professional name with pride.”

United States Marine Corps – Foundational Years

Before beginning his broadcasting career, JC served in the United States Marine Corps, where he developed the precision, confidence, and discipline that shaped his approach to media.

Assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, he was chosen to serve as the ceremonial emcee for official military events that included retirements, promotions, changes of command, and award presentations. These ceremonies were attended by senior officers, fellow Marines, families, and at times both United States and international dignitaries. Every event required accuracy, preparation, and steady live delivery.

While serving with the 10th Marines Regiment and the 2nd Marine Division, JC worked with leadership teams to refine the official retirement ceremony format and master script. The goal was to improve clarity, pacing, and continuity for participants and guests. The updated structure proved effective and was later adopted by multiple commands as a model for professional presentation.

This experience strengthened his voice, timing, and composure. It taught him how to connect with an audience, control a room, and communicate with purpose. Those skills became the bedrock of his work both on stage and behind the microphone.

Podcasting & Creative Achievement

Jim Connors, professionally known as JC, is an award-winning podcast host, voice talent, and broadcast strategist recognized for his precision in storytelling, dedication to lifelong learning, and leadership in educational media. He is the creator and host of Interesting Things with JC, an independent, fact-driven microlearning podcast built around tightly crafted stories designed to educate and inspire in under five minutes. With deep roots in broadcasting and content strategy, JC has created a platform that blends historical insight with cultural relevance one meaningful story at a time.

As the sole creator, writer, and producer of Interesting Things with JC, he has shaped a globally distributed series known for its clarity, depth, and authenticity. Every episode is independently researched and produced, reflecting his commitment to accurate information, accessible education, and editorial integrity. In 2025, JC’s work earned international recognition as a finalist for Best Science Podcast at the inaugural Astra Awards presented by the Hollywood Creative Alliance, the same organization behind the Critics Choice Awards. This honor placed Interesting Things with JC alongside leading global producers and highlighted the strength and impact of independent creators in education, science communication, and short-form storytelling.

Broadcasting Leadership and ThinkBright:

A Lifelong Learning Network That Became One of North America’s Largest

When JC joined WNED Buffalo Toronto Public Media in the early 2000s, he stepped into one of the most respected public broadcasting environments in North America. WNED operated under a rare dual-license structure, serving PBS and NPR audiences across Western New York and deep into Southern Ontario. It was a place where engineering, programming, education, and mission-driven service converged every day.

JC began in the tape library, the hub of analog-era storage and signal flow. His reliability and eye for detail immediately stood out. Before long, two senior leaders recognized his potential. Vice President of Broadcasting Ron Santora and Program Manager Goldie Gardner brought him directly into their orbit. That decision shaped the rest of his broadcasting life.

Ron was widely known across PBS for his programming instincts, technical fluency, and cross-border partnerships. He blended editorial strategy with engineering logic in ways few programmers could. Goldie, meanwhile, was the station’s creative anchor. She understood pacing, audience flow, and how a station’s on-air identity came together from moment to moment. She became one of JC’s most trusted mentors. He worked as her direct report, and they formed a professional bond built on respect, shared standards, and a sharp focus on viewer experience.

This early mentorship prepared JC for his promotion to Program Coordinator, where he became a key part of WNED’s public outreach during the national FCC digital television transition. Millions of Americans were facing converter box requirements, HDTV adoption, and spectrum changes. JC helped guide viewers through one of the largest technological shifts in broadcasting history, explaining why free over-the-air reception still mattered and how the transition would affect daily viewing.

At the same time, behind the scenes, WNED was undertaking one of its largest technical upgrades. In August 2004, TV Technology reported that WNED had ordered a large-scale Sundance Digital Titan automation system as part of its digital upgrade. The Titan platform, installed across major public broadcasters, was designed to handle multi-channel operations with redundancy, automated recording, and master-control integration. According to the article, Vice President of Engineering and Technology Jonathan Herrington stated that Titan would “position [WNED] for future growth.” The upgrade included TitanSync redundancy and Intelli-Sat automation, enabling WNED to manage five on-air channels. JC worked alongside Herrington and the engineering team during this period, gaining firsthand experience with the technological backbone that allowed WNED to modernize and expand its service footprint. The article also affirmed WNED’s cross-border identity, describing it as a “border station serving the Buffalo area as well as Southern Ontario.”

This technical groundwork paved the way for the next chapter of JC’s career. When Goldie retired, JC advanced to Program Manager, taking on programming acquisition, scheduling, digital rights licensing, FCC compliance, long-term planning, and operational support across WNED’s dual-license PBS and NPR services. His role also required close coordination with master control, engineering, educational outreach, and community engagement teams on both sides of the U.S.–Canada border.

It was during these years that WNED leadership, including Ron Santora, Program Manager Goldie Gardner, Vice President for Education and Outreach Pam Johnson, and President and CEO Donald K. Boswell, built the foundation for ThinkBright Lifelong Learning. Johnson’s work in education, including her leadership on Reading Rainbow and Ready To Learn, is documented in the 2024 book Creating Reading Rainbow: The Untold Story of a Beloved Children’s Series and reflects the culture of innovation she brought to WNED.

Under this leadership, and through the operational work of JC and the engineering teams, ThinkBright Lifelong Learning was launched as a statewide educational network. It began as a local educational block and expanded into a twelve-hour daily broadcast service supported by a 2.5 million dollar grant from the John R. Oishei Foundation.

ThinkBright was carried across every major PBS station in New York State:
• WNED in Buffalo serving Western New York and Southern Ontario
• WXXI in Rochester
• WCNY in Syracuse
• WMHT in Albany serving Western Massachusetts and Southern Vermont
• WSKG in Binghamton serving Northern Pennsylvania
• Mountain Lake PBS in Plattsburgh serving Montreal and Southern Quebec
• WNET and WLIW serving New York City and Long Island

By 2008, internal carriage records estimated ThinkBright at twelve and a half million households and more than thirty million viewers, making it one of the largest educational broadcast footprints in North America outside of PBS itself.

JC played a central operational role in the statewide interconnect. He coordinated schedules among all participating stations, managed licensing and rights, worked with master control and engineering departments across multiple markets, and ensured regulatory and cultural consistency for U.S. and Canadian audiences. His work was hands-on, high stakes, and required an understanding of programming flow, technical capacity, and educational mission.

ThinkBright Lifelong Learning earned significant recognition, including:
2006 InfoTech WNY BETA Award for Educational Achievement
P2 Award for Innovation in Public Service Media
• Additional honors for digital-transition leadership, educational access, and collaborative service

The service also carried award-winning content from external producers. Several publicly credited WNED and ThinkBright as valued educational partners, underscoring the service’s credibility and reach.

In 2008, JC also served as a judge for ACEFEST in New York City, listed as “Jim Connors – Broadcasting, ThinkBright TV Network.” This national recognition reflected his standing within the larger media and educational community.

Long before digital-first educational video became the norm, ThinkBright Lifelong Learning set a statewide standard for educational broadcasting, unified distribution, and cross-border public service. JC’s work alongside Ron Santora, Goldie Gardner, Pam Johnson, and Donald Boswell helped shape an era of innovation at WNED that reached millions of viewers across two countries.

Those years remain one of the most meaningful chapters of JC’s broadcast career, defined by mentorship, purpose, collaboration, and a shared belief in public media’s ability to educate and uplift entire communities.

Golden trophy with a figure resembling a person, awarded at The Communicator Awards 2025 to Jim Connors for Producing, Editing, and Hosting the podcast "Interesting Things with JC".

Winning the 2025 Communicator Award of Excellence for Interesting Things with JC in the Series, Educational category is deeply meaningful, not because of a title, but because it reflects what the work has always tried to do: spark curiosity and make learning feel reachable for anyone willing to listen. Recognition from the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts reminds me that careful research, honest storytelling, and respect for the audience still matter, even in a crowded media world.

As an independent creator, this kind of honor feels personal. Every episode is built from persistence, long hours of digging for facts, and a belief that education should be clear, grounded, and human. The award doesn’t change the mission, it simply reinforces that there is value in staying consistent and doing the work with integrity. More than a milestone, it’s a reminder that stories rooted in truth and curiosity still connect with people. And with more than 1,300 episodes behind it at the time of this recognition, Interesting Things with JC continues forward with the same goal it started with: accessible microlearning that encourages students, educators, and lifelong learners to keep asking questions.

Receiving a Gold MarCom Award means a lot, not just as recognition for Interesting Things with JC, but as validation that thoughtful, educational storytelling still has a place in today’s media world. The Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals reviews work from across the globe, so being named a Gold recipient feels both humbling and deeply meaningful. This isn’t about polish or hype, it’s about showing that honest research, clear communication, and respect for the audience still matter.

For Interesting Things with JC, the award reinforces why the show exists in the first place: to make learning approachable, accurate, and worth someone’s time. Every episode starts with curiosity and a desire to share something real, and this recognition reflects that ongoing effort. It acknowledges the work behind the microphone, the hours of research, and the commitment to telling stories that educate without losing their human side. More than anything, it’s a reminder to keep doing the work the right way.

Receiving the 2025 Gold MUSE Creative Award for Interesting Things with JC is an honor that speaks to the heart of why the show exists. It is not only about sharing information, it is about presenting education in a way that feels alive, thoughtful, and grounded in real storytelling. Recognition like this reminds me that originality and careful craft still matter, especially when the goal is to help people stay curious and keep learning.

The MUSE Creative Awards, presented by the International Awards Associate, bring together work from across the world, and being included among those voices feels both humbling and encouraging. For an independent creator, it shows that meaningful work can stand alongside larger productions when it is built on authenticity and purpose. The gold statuette represents more than achievement; it reflects the countless hours of research, writing, recording, and refining that go into every episode. Most of all, it reinforces the mission behind Interesting Things with JC: to make history, science, and culture accessible, honest, and engaging for anyone who chooses to listen.

Winning the 2024 Gold Davey Award for Interesting Things with JC was a turning point. It was the first major recognition for a show built from the ground up, self funded, and driven by a commitment to lifelong learning. That moment showed that a small independent production could stand alongside larger global media simply by staying focused on quality and purpose.

This recognition also belongs to the people who supported the show early on. A sincere thank you goes to Gerard Edwards and Podcast Radio in both the UK and USA, whose early belief in the series helped bring it to wider audiences and gave it room to grow.

Winning the 2025 Gold Hermes Creative Award for Interesting Things with JC, Episode 1235, “Three Turns to Freedom,” carries a meaning that goes well beyond an award title. At its core, this recognition is about the connection between a listener and a storyteller, and how one message can turn into something lasting.

The story began with Maxine in Ripon, California. She reached out simply because she cared about the history of barrel racing, and that spark of curiosity led to a deeper look at the sport, the discipline behind it, and the quiet strength between horse and rider. What started as her idea became one of the most personal and meaningful episodes in the series.

The Hermes Creative Awards, presented by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, recognize excellence in writing, concept, and production, but this honor belongs just as much to the people who inspire the stories as it does to the person behind the microphone. It is a reminder that the best episodes do not come from chasing recognition, they come from listening. Without Maxine’s passion and willingness to share what she loved, this episode and everything that followed from it would not exist.

Winning the 2025 Gold AVA Digital Award for Interesting Things with JC in the Educational Podcast category felt especially meaningful because it recognized the entire series, not just one moment in time. It reflects the steady work behind building something independent that stays focused on making learning accessible, honest, and worth listening to.

This honor is dedicated to each and every listener, and especially to those who reach out, interact, and share ideas that shape the direction of the show. Many of the strongest episodes begin with a simple message, a suggestion, or a spark of curiosity from someone willing to engage. Recognition from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals acknowledges the effort behind the microphone, but it also belongs to the community that continues to inspire the stories. More than anything, it is a reminder that this series grows because listeners care enough to be part of it.

Winning this honor for Interesting Things with JC #1344: “The SnackWrap Guy of Hendersonville” means a great deal, not just because of recognition for the podcast in the Education category, but because it shines a light on Donoven Darshawn Rice and what he set in motion. This story was never about me, it was about documenting the heart, creativity, and persistence of someone who turned a simple idea into something meaningful.

Donoven’s voice and determination helped bring the SnackWrap conversation back into the public eye while also rallying people around a cause bigger than himself. His efforts showed how one person’s passion can spark real world generosity and support for others.

The award stands as recognition in of that spirit and the positive energy he shared with the community. My role was simply to tell the story as it unfolded and give it a platform where more people could hear it. Big respect to Donoven for the heart, vision, and humanity that made this story worth telling.

A gold trophy of a crowned woman in a flowing dress with an eagle on her shoulder. The base reads: “NYX Awards 2025 Gold Winner Jim Connors (JC), Producer, Editor & Host, Interesting Things with JC, Audio & Podcasts / Education.”

Interesting Things with JC being named a Gold Winner in the “Audio & Podcasts – Education” category at the 2025 NYX Awards means a lot, especially because it recognizes the work of the entire series. The show has always been built on short, fact driven stories meant to respect people’s time while still delivering something meaningful. To see that approach acknowledged among entries from more than 30 countries feels real, honest, and deeply appreciated.

Hosted by Jim Connors and produced independently without sponsors, the podcast continues to stay focused on what mattered from the start: clear research, historically grounded storytelling, and free curriculum aligned resources for anyone who wants to learn. This honor is not just about the microphone or the production, it reflects the listeners, educators, and curious minds who continue to show up, listen, and keep the conversation going.

Several gold trophies and awards displayed on a surface, with a wooden piece and bird figurines in the background.

Interesting Things with JC receiving the Gold Viddy Award in the Non Broadcast Creativity | Script Writing category felt especially personal because the script has always been the heart of everything. Long before recording or editing begins, it is the writing that shapes the rhythm, the facts, and the meaning behind each episode. This recognition speaks directly to that process, the quiet hours spent researching, refining language, and making sure every word carries weight.

The award reflects a commitment to clear, honest storytelling in a short format where there is no room for filler. Each script is built to respect the listener’s time while still delivering depth, accuracy, and a sense of discovery. For an independent creator, being recognized specifically for writing is deeply meaningful because it validates the foundation the entire series stands on. More than a benchmark or a title, this honor simply reinforces what has always mattered most: the words, the story, and the connection they create with people who choose to listen.

Winning a Gold dotCOMM Award from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals felt like a strong affirmation of what Interesting Things with JC has always tried to do. Being recognized in the “Podcasts | Series | 217. Education” category speaks to the steady work of turning complex topics into stories people can understand and carry with them.

For me, this honor is less about recognition and more about the reminder that clear, thoughtful storytelling still matters. Every episode is built to respect the listener’s time while keeping education honest, grounded, and accessible. The award reflects the consistency behind the series and the belief that meaningful learning can reach people anywhere when it is delivered with care and purpose.

Interesting Things with JC was awarded the 2025 Gold Smithy Award in the Photography, Video & Sound | Podcast/Podcast Audio category, a recognition that speaks directly to the craft behind the work. The Smithy Awards focus on creativity, communication, and storytelling that demonstrates clear purpose, making this honor feel grounded in the process as much as the outcome.

For an independent podcast built one episode at a time, this recognition reflects the discipline, research, and consistency behind the series. Every story represents a commitment to clear, thoughtful educational content created without a large production structure or outside sponsorship. With this honor, Interesting Things with JC now stands at 16 industry awards and 2 finalist distinctions over the past year, marking an important milestone while reinforcing the core mission of accessible, lifelong learning for listeners everywhere.

Being recognized as a 2025 W3 Award Honoree is a meaningful milestone for Interesting Things with JC, reflecting the steady work behind its approach to digital education and storytelling. The Silver Award in the General Series | Educational and Instructional category speaks to the show’s focus on presenting knowledge clearly, with purpose, and in a way that respects the listener’s time and curiosity.

Presented by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts, the W3 Awards highlight strong work across digital media, including podcasts, video, and interactive platforms. To be included among this year’s honorees is an encouraging reminder that independent creators can still stand alongside larger productions when the work stays grounded in research and honest communication.

For a series built on fact based storytelling and lifelong learning, this recognition reinforces the reason the show exists in the first place. It reflects consistency, discipline, and a commitment to making complex ideas understandable without losing their depth. More than anything, it is a reminder that meaningful educational content still matters to people who are willing to listen and learn.

Winning a 2025 Communicator Award for The HR Lady Podcast in the Series, Educational category feels both meaningful and bittersweet. Serving as Technical Producer, Editor, and Co Host was a role I took seriously, and it meant a lot to help bring Wendy Sellers’ direct, honest voice to life for professionals trying to make sense of modern workplace challenges.

After the award, the podcast came to a close in May 2025 due to budget realities, and while that ending was difficult, it does not take away from what the show accomplished. The conversations were real, the impact was genuine, and the work we put into each episode mattered to the people who listened. This recognition now stands as a closing chapter, a reminder of the collaboration, effort, and purpose that shaped the series from start to finish.

A silver and gold trophy shaped like a Roman soldier with a shield, awarded at the VEGA Digital Awards 2025 to Jim Connors for producing, editing, hosting, and creating a podcast series called 'Interesting Things with JC'.

Interesting Things with JC was honored with the 2025 Silver Vega Digital Award in the Podcast Campaign, Education category for its first season, a recognition that reflects the steady work behind building something meaningful from the ground up. As a self funded educational series that began with a curriculum pilot aimed at supporting underserved learners, the award speaks to the value of independent storytelling driven by purpose rather than scale.

By pairing concise, fact grounded episodes with free, standards aligned learning materials, the show continues to grow one listener at a time. This recognition belongs just as much to the dedicated daily audience who listens, shares ideas, and helps keep the mission of accessible lifelong learning moving forward.

Interesting Things with JC received the 2025 Silver NY Digital Award recognizing excellence in web and digital presence, an honor that reflects the quiet work behind the scenes as much as what listeners hear on the microphone. Every page, every post, and every piece of curriculum on JimConnors.net has been built with intention, shaped by a commitment to clarity, accessibility, and respect for the audience.

As an independently produced project, this recognition feels deeply personal. It speaks to the long hours spent refining structure, maintaining consistency, and making sure the digital experience matches the educational purpose of the show itself. Standing alongside agency backed productions is encouraging, but more than anything, it reinforces that thoughtful design and honest storytelling still carry weight.

To every listener, every visitor who takes the time to explore the site, and everyone who has supported the journey along the way, this recognition belongs to you as much as it does to the work itself.

Interesting Things with JC received a Silver TITAN Award, a recognition that reflects the steady work behind building something meaningful through independent storytelling. The TITAN Awards honor creators and communicators whose work shows strength in purpose, clarity, and execution, and this acknowledgment speaks to the consistency that has shaped the series from the beginning.

For a self funded educational podcast, the award is not just about recognition, it is a reminder that thoughtful research, honest writing, and respect for the audience still matter. A special thank you goes to Dr. Igo for being part of this journey, contributing countless episode ideas and fact based research that helped strengthen the series along the way. The collaboration and shared curiosity behind those conversations have played a real role in the show’s success, and someday, a podcast together feels like the natural next chapter.

A golden, abstract statue resembling a human figure with flowing, draped features, mounted on a black and gold base. The base has a metal plaque inscribed with the text, 'The Telly Awards 2025, Jim Connors (JC), Producer, Editor, & Host, Interesting Things with JC, Online/Series - Education.'

Winning a Bronze Telly Award in the 46th Annual Competition was a major milestone, one that reaches back to my early days in broadcasting when recognition like this felt like a distant goal. To see Interesting Things with JC honored in the “Series – Education & Discovery” category, chosen from more than 13,000 entries worldwide, carries real weight. It reflects the long road from traditional radio to building an independent educational series that stays focused on clarity, curiosity, and lifelong learning.

As a fully independent production with no sponsors, no agency backing, and no presenting station, this recognition feels especially personal. It shows that careful writing, fact grounded storytelling, and a steady vision still have a place in today’s media landscape. More than anything, the award stands as a reminder that substance matters, and that content built with purpose can still connect with people and earn respect on a global stage.
